Pima Air Museum

Our travel today took us to the Pima Air and Space Museum which is located here in Tucson. The grounds cover 80 acres and they have both inside and outside displays.

Ok, lets get down to the fun stuff – Airplanes – lots and lots of – Airplanes – with the occasional helicopter thrown in just for fun. This place was quite unique because it ran the gambit from a Boeing Dreamliner 787 which is quite new to a mock up of the original Wright Flyer which is of course, about as old of an airplane as you can get. They also had what could be called a Boneyard section where there were just bits and pieces of planes. Of course we were not allowed into that section.

Unlike a lot of Air and Space Museums, this one had quite a bit of civil aviation along with the plethora of military aircraft. This was especially nice since while I am clearly a military plane buff (I do like the big commercial birds but no real interest in the little stuff) my big brother Steve is primarily a civil aviation buff (he got that from dad. In fact, they even had the same type of plane dad flew for the Civil Air Patrol.)

A couple of the highlights of this place was a former Air Force One, actually they had a couple of them but only one of the 707 variety, that is the type I got to fly on with then VP Gore when he went to bid farewell to Pope John Paul all those years ago. Really one of the highlights of my military career.

So sit back, peruse the over 70 photos, and enjoy geeking out on airplanes.
